Just about everyone can appreciate beautiful freshwater fish tanks and many wish to have one or maybe even more in their own homes. The thing is though, many have been told that dealing with such tanks might be more than they can handle. While it is true that there are certain steps you are going to have to take, all in all, the upkeep of the freshwater tanks really are not that bad, once you know what it is that you are expected to do. Learning as much as you can about setting up freshwater fish tanks will help you determine whether or not this is really something for you.
One of the easiest ways to get started setting up these fish tanks is to purchase a tank with a hood and light already included. You will want to make sure that the light is a full spectrum light. If it isn’t, you will want to go ahead and change it to one. Add your choice of gravel but if you are adding plants, you will want to make sure that you are picking gravel that is suitable for that.
Add your water. Make sure that you are not overfilling the tank as this could lead to a big mess. It is best to always leave about an inch at the top of the tank. Next, you will want to add your plants. If you want to give the best possible environment for your fish, you will want live plants instead of the plastic ones and you will want the un-potted ones. Push some rocks around the base of the plants until they can stand on their own.
Now you will want to add your filter. Make sure that you are preparing and installing it according to the instructions that came from the manufacturer. Even though most filtration systems are about the same, there could be some differences. By following the directions you will be sure to get the exact filtration you are looking for. Attach the hood and turn on the light.
Leave the tank running for about a week, without any fish in it. Test the water to make sure that the levels and the temperature are fine. Then, you can go ahead and add your freshwater fish. After a while, you might feel the need for additional fish tanks. Some people will want to actually use one of their fish tanks for the reason of breeding plants for future tanks.
As you can see, there are a few steps to take when you are setting up fish tanks for freshwater fish, but the steps are not as many as there is for saltwater fish. This is because freshwater fish do not require the salt and they are hardier than you would think. Even if your first tank does not turn out as amazing as you would have liked for it to be, you can always try again. Set up a new tank or wait for cleaning time. You can always add new plants, new decorations, new fish or upgrade to a larger tank. Play around with your fish tanks until you find what suits you the best!
